Anesthesia Providers’ Knowledge of Medication Interference With Hormonal Contraception: A Multisite Survey

( Anesth Analg . 2025;140(1):145–154. doi: 10.1213/ANE.0000000000007081) This study aimed to assess anesthesia providers’ knowledge of how sugammadex and aprepitant interact with hormonal contraceptives (HC), as well as their patient counseling practices regarding these interactions. These medications are commonly used in the perioperative setting; however, they may reduce the effectiveness of HCs, which could lead to unintended pregnancies if not properly managed. In January 2023, a survey was distributed to anesthesia providers at multiple Mayo Clinic locations, including Mayo Clinic Rochester, Mayo Clinic Arizona, Mayo Clinic Florida, and Mayo Clinic Health System hospitals. The survey was comprised of 32 questions that focused on providers' use of sugammadex and aprepitant, their understanding of these drugs' potential interactions with HC, and their counseling practices during the perioperative period.
