Increased Relative Incidence of Maternal Death by Suicide
( BJOG . 2024;131(10):1399. doi: 10.1111/1471-0528.17804) This article is a miniature commentary focusing on the results from a recent study by Lommerse and colleagues on the trends of maternal suicide in the Netherlands. This study found that an increasing proportion of maternal mortality can be attributed to maternal suicide, and that there is significant underreporting of maternal suicide classified as directly or indirectly related to pregnancy (during pregnancy and within 1 y of delivery). In the UK, data is reported through “Confidential Enquiries into Maternal Deaths (CEMD)” since 1957 and now includes data from England, Ireland, Scotland, and Wales.
