A Comparative Study of Metaphorical Translation of Zang-Xiang Terms in Huangdi Neijing from the Perspective of Conceptual Metaphor
As one of the core elements of literary language, metaphor serves not only as a rhetorical device but also as a way of perceiving and conceptualizing the world. The method of analogical thinking through symbolic imagery (qu xiang bi lei) is a distinctive feature of traditional Chinese medical thought. Huangdi Neijing, one of the four canonical classics of traditional Chinese medicine, contains a wealth of simple yet vivid metaphors. How these metaphors are translated—and how their rhetorical and conceptual effects are faithfully conveyed—plays a crucial role in the cross-cultural transmission of Chinese medicine. Based on translation meme theory, this study examines the metaphor translation process in the Huangdi Neijing and conducts a comparative analysis of two major English versions, aiming to provide a unique perspective on the nature of metaphor and the preservation of traditional Chinese medical culture.
