THE CHARACTER OF ADOLESCENTS IN THE NORTH ACEH COASTAL AREA: AN IMPACT OF AUTHORITARIAN PARENTING STYLE
This study explores the impact of authoritarian parenting on the character development of adolescents in coastal communities of North Aceh, Indonesia. Rooted in Islamic values and reinforced by Qur'anic verses and prophetic traditions, the research underscores the central role of parents in shaping children's moral and emotional development. Using a qualitative approach, data were collected through in-depth interviews with fifteen fisher families across three coastal regions. The findings reveal that authoritarian parenting—characterized by strict control, lack of dialogue, and harsh communication—has led to adverse adolescent behaviors, including rebelliousness, impoliteness, indiscipline, and irresponsibility. These effects are influenced by generational parenting patterns, low educational attainment, and the unique socio-cultural context of coastal communities. The study highlights the importance of integrating religious principles, positive parenting practices, and character education in fostering adolescents' development. Implications for family education programs and policy are discussed to promote healthier parenting styles in culturally specific settings.
