Seed rearing of Puntius sarana in cement cisterns

The present experiment was conducted to study the growth and survival of Puntius sarana at varying stocking densities in cement cisterns. Study was carried out for a period of 90days in (7m×3m×1m) tank with three treatments and each have three replication having four different densities of stocking such as, 0.2 million ha-1, 0.3 million ha-1, 0.4 million ha-1 and 0.5 million ha-1 in T0, T1, T2 and T3 respectively. During the initiation of experiment, the initial weight of fish was (0.82±0.01 g), (0.82±0.01 g), (0.82±0.01 g) and (0.82±0.01 g) in T0, T1, T2 and T3 respectively. Fishes in all experimental cement cisterns supplemented with ground nut oil cake and de-oiled rice bran (1:1) at a rate 10% of their biomass throughout culture period. Random sampling was done at an interval of 15 days to measure the growth performance of fish. It was recorded that the water quality parameters like pH, water temperature, dissolved oxygen, hardness and alkalinity were within the optimal range for fish farming. At the end of experiment, weight gain for the treatments differed significantly (p<0.05). Survivability was varied between 80.1% and 66.9%. Mean SGR gradually decreased while stocking density increased. Daily weight gain and weight gain of species has significant among the treatment (p<0.05). Biomass yield was higher in T2 (5245±146 g) and T3 (5850.1±105.01 g) as compare to T0 (4496.23±291.19 g) and T1 (4556.86±137.33 g). The biomass yield of T2 and T3 was highly significant than T0 and T1 but there is no significant difference between the T2 and T3 (p>0.05). The stocking density @ 0.5 million fry/ha is found suitable to get the highest biomass (5850.1±105.01 g).
