Evaluating the therapeutic benefits of high-intensity laser and ultrasound modalities in chronic coccydynia

Background: Chronic coccydynia, often resulting from trauma or prolonged stress on the coccyx, substantially impairs daily activities and quality of life. High-Intensity Laser Therapy (HILT) has shown growing promise as a non-invasive intervention for managing musculoskeletal pain. Objective: This study investigated and compared the short-term effects of HILT and ultrasound therapy in alleviating pain among individuals with chronic coccydynia. Methods: Medical data from 34 patients with confirmed chronic coccydynia were retrospectively analyzed. Pain severity was recorded using the Visual Analog Scale (VAS) before, during, and after 12 treatment sessions administered over two weeks. HILT was administered using standardized parameters. A comparison group underwent ultrasound therapy under equivalent clinical conditions. Results: After completing 12 sessions, patients treated with HILT showed a more marked decrease in VAS scores than those receiving ultrasound. Statistical analysis revealed significant between-group differences in pain relief, favoring the HILT intervention. Conclusion: High-Intensity Laser Therapy appears to offer superior pain reduction when compared to conventional ultrasound treatment in patients with chronic coccydynia. These findings support incorporating HILT as an effective modality in clinical practice.
