4D Mapping: A Re-generative Approach to Organizational Development
This paper examines 4D Mapping, a methodology within Social Presencing Theater (SPT), as an approach to re-generative organizational development in an era of polycrisis and systemic disruption. When working with complex systems change, practitioners face the fundamental challenge of navigating transformation beyond predictability. While the field of organizational development offers numerous theories and tools for planned change, we propose that transformative practices require integrating systems thinking with systems sensing—an embodied, felt-sense approach that activates both heart and sensory awareness, enabling systems to see and sense themselves. By making explicit the eclectic theoretical foundations of 4D Mapping, we aim to deepen our awareness as practitioners and action researchers regarding what is the systems intervention and the inner place from which we operate (awareness, attitude, view and assumptions), and what are our ways of knowing (epistemology), and how we conceptualize change (theory of change) implicitly held in the practice. Beyond examining the fundamentals of 4D Mapping, we investigate its impact through a case study of the Witoto Institute in Brazil, illustrating how embodied insights can translate into concrete systemic changes. The process revealed both immediate organizational blind spots and deeper systemic patterns, while catalyzing concrete shifts in stakeholder relationships. Our findings hope to contribute to both theory and practice by articulating how embodied methodologies can support emergent change, tapping into regenerative potential and vitality of systems.
