Relationship of Trait Leadership with the Organizational Trust of Secondary School Teachers

Leadership traits play a critical role in fostering trust within educational institutions. However, empirical evidence examining this association within Pakistan’s secondary education system remains limited. Therefore, the present study aimed to investigate the relationship between trait leadership and organizational trust among secondary school teachers in the Quetta Division of Balochistan, Pakistan. Guided by Denison’s organizational culture model, the study explored four core leadership traits: adaptability, involvement, consistency, and mission orientation (Schein,1989). A cross-sectional correlational research design was employed, and data were initially collected from 330 secondary school teachers across four districts through proportionate stratified sampling. Of these, 322 provided complete and valid responses. Standardized instruments were used to measure variables, and the data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation, and linear regression. The findings revealed a statistically significant and strong positive correlation between overall trait leadership and organizational trust (r = .770, p < .01). Furthermore, adaptability (r = .753) and mission orientation (r = .733) emerged as the most influential traits in shaping organizational trust. Regression analysis showed that trait leadership significantly predicted organizational trust (β = .770, p < .001), explaining 59.3% of the variance. The findings of the study suggest that visionary (mission) and adaptive leadership behaviors assist as essential determinants of a trust-oriented organizational climate in schools. The results of this study enrich the new knowledge to the body of literature on educational leadership and furnish practical takeaways for policy and managing practices with the objectives to strengthen the trust-based school climate in the public (Government) education sector of Balochistan.
