Research and Clinical Application of Mechanical Properties of Arterial Vasculature
Arterial blood vessels biomechanical properties are critical for cardiovascular health, as alterations in arterial structure are closely associated with pathological states. Through histological examination of the arterial wall architecture, and large-scale mechanical testing data attendance, this study analyses how vascular compliance and elasticity are affected by atherosclerotic plaque formation. By conducting uniaxial tensile tests and computational modeling analyses, we determined how well these methods are able to describe pathological remodeling, missing that neither captures in vivo dynamic mechanical loading conditions particularly well. Besides, the mechanical properties of the artery have practical significance in clinical use, such as stent implantation and artificial vessel design. Future studies should concentrate on multiscale modeling, patient-specific models, and new technologies to obtain data with higher physiological fidelity and relevance to clinical applications.
