Cost Analysis and Economic Viability of Battery Powered Weeder
This study explores the cost analysis and economic feasibility of using battery-powered weeders on small and medium-sized farms in India. Traditional weeding methods are labour-intensive and costly, consuming a significant portion of production expenses. While mechanization offers a solution, the high initial costs of petrol engine-powered weeders often deter small-scale farmers. Battery-powered weeders, however, present a more accessible and cost-effective alternative, significantly reducing operational expenses. The study finds that these weeders can save up to 71% in costs compared to manual methods and 40.2% compared to petrol-powered alternatives, with a favorable payback period of approximately 0.8 years. Once a breakeven point of 42,883.3 INR is reached, battery-powered weeders become more economical than both petrolpowered options and manual weeding labour services. This shift towards battery technology not only eases the financial burden on farmers but also promotes more sustainable farming practices by reducing fossil fuel dependency and environmental impact.
