Evaluation of urine cytology according to paris system at tertiary care teaching hospital

Background: Urine cytology serves as a pivotal, non-invasive diagnostic tool for the detection and monitoring of urothelial carcinoma (UC). The Paris System (TPS) is an international system to standardize the reporting of urinary cytology and it focuses on the diagnosis of HGUC. Aim and objective: To evaluate the frequency of high grade urothelial carcinoma in urine cytology and to determine the accuracy of Paris system. Material and method: A retrospective study was conducted in the Department of Pathology (Cytology), at B.J Medical College and Civil Hospital, Ahmedabad from Jan 2024 to dec 2024 where a total of 70 cases were included. All freshly collected urine specimens were cyto-centrifuged, prepared as thin slides fixed with methanol and Stain the smears with pap and H&E stain. Then evaluated under light microscopy. Result: In our study total 70 cases were analysed,60 male and 10 female, the male: female ratio being 6:1,The most commonly affected age group was 61-70, It was Found in our Study that 15.7 % cases had Non-Diagnostic, 54.3% cases were NHGUC, 21.4% cases had Atypical urothelial cells. 2.9% cases were suspicious for high grade urothelial carcinoma and 5.7% had High grade urothelial carcinoma. Conclusion: The Paris system is highly specific for high grade urothelial carcinoma, there by TPS helping in early management of patient with neoplastic lesion of urinary bladder.
