Study of Antiulcerogenic Effect of Leaves Extract of Origanum Vulgare L.

The origanum vulgare L. plants lamiaceae family drugs consist of abundant amount of Flavonoids, Phenolic compounds and other vital constituents responsible for curative action against peptic ulcer and also possess an antioxidant activity, In the present study one such indigenous medicinal plant Origanum Vulgare L. used for the treatment of ulcer in the traditional system of medicine was selected for preliminary phytochemical screening and evaluation of antiulcer activity using experimental models. Ulceration in reserpine-induced gastric ulcer model in which the animal treated with dose given as per in vivo model, produced significant decrease in ulcer index by 0.724 ± 0.191 (p<0.01) and 0.537 ± 0.153 compared with diseased control. (p<0.001) respectively. The extract at the dose of 200 mg/kg body weight afforded 26.33 % for EEOV. The 49.30% and 53.37 % ulcer protection for EEOVF1 and EEOVF2 respectively and whereas Omeprazole (20 mg/kg) exhibited 69.10 % ulcer protection. For anti-ulcer activity against serotonin-induced gastric ulceration in rats in which the animal treated with dose given as per in vivo model, produced significant decrease in ulcer index by 5.01 ± 0.31 (p<0.01). The extract at the dose of 200 mg/kg body weight afforded 18.16 % for EEOV. The 34.89 and 49.03 % ulcer protection for EEOVF1 and EEOVF2 respectively and whereas Omeprazole (20 mg/kg) exhibited 72.22% ulcer protection and for anti-ulcer activity against diethyldithiocarbamate-induced gastric ulceration in rats. They significantly reduced the incidence and severity of ulceration in diethyldithiocarbamate-induced gastric ulcer model. The animal treated with dose given as per in vivo model, produced significant decrease in ulcer index by 4.50 ± 0.53 (p<0.01).
