The role of community radio in enhancing the Badaga funeral fund scheme and improving economic and lifestyle conditions
The Badaga people, indigenous to the Nilgiris district, are renowned for their harmonious coexistence with nature and other local tribes, as well as their commitment to hospitality and education. This community, deeply rooted in cultural traditions, has quietly implemented a successful savings plan over the past 15 years, known as the Badaga Funeral Savings Plan. This paper examines the intricate details of this plan, which was first publicized and disseminated through the local community radio station, "Radio Kotagiri, 90.4." Utilizing a sample size of 244 participants, this study employs both qualitative and quantitative analyses to explore the transformative role of community radio in enhancing the economic prospects and lifestyle of the Badaga people. The theoretical framework underpinning this research draws on theories of social capital and community resilience, positing that community-based communication channels such as local radio can significantly influence social cohesion and economic stability. The study reveals that Radio Kotagiri not only facilitated the dissemination of the Funeral Savings Plan but also reinforced community bonds and fostered a culture of financial prudence. Through in-depth interviews and surveys, the research highlights the multifaceted benefits of the savings plan, including improved financial security, reduced economic strain during funerals, and the preservation of cultural practices. The findings underscore the critical impact of community radio as a catalyst for socio-economic development and cultural preservation among indigenous populations. This study contributes to the broader understanding of how localized communication platforms can drive sustainable development and community empowerment. • Cultural and Economic Impact: The study explores how Radio Kotagiri's promotion of the Badaga Funeral Savings Plan boosted community finances and unity • Empirical Evidence: Using 244 samples, the study shows how community radio boosts cohesion, economic stability, and cultural preservation. • Statistical Significance: The study finds strong links between radio impact and awareness, plan participation, financial stability, and cultural preservation. • Cultural Preservation: Community radio-backed Funeral Savings Plan helps the Badaga preserve funeral rites and traditions amid economic challenges. • Scope for Future Research: The paper urges more research on merging digital tech with community radio and finance plans to boost development and culture.
