Analyzing the Effect of Biplane Design in Rigid Wing Sails Using CFD Simulation
The biplane design was used in several fields, including aviation, racing cars, and sailboats, but the research on bisail is quite few. However, bisail can bring many advantages such as increasing lift coefficient Cl, and enhancing the structural integrity. The possibility to replace the monosail by bisail with a higher aerodynamic efficiency are be dectected. In this case. The research simulates and compares a rigid NACA0012 of chord length 1 m and a bisail with the same wing section but two parallel smaller wings with chord length 0.5 meach with separation 0.5m under Reynolds number 700k in ANSYS 2024 R1 student. In the simulation, the quadrilateral mesh and cell number 57k are finally used. For the results, the thrust coefficient Ct is compared in different angles of attack in both monosail and bisail. The best angle of attack in each driving direction is calculated. In addition, the parallel bisail is not better than the monosail for the current setting.
