KINETICS OF DECOMPOSITION OF PARA-CHLOROANILINE IN AQUEOUS SOLUTION UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF ATMOSPHERIC PRESSURE DC DISCHARGE IN AIR

The article presents the results of studies of the kinetics of para-chloroaniline decomposition in its aqueous solutions under the action of a direct current discharge of atmospheric pressure burning in the air above the surface of the solution. The experiments were carried out for cases when the solution served as either a cathode or anode of the discharge system. The range of the studied discharge currents was 30-70 mA, and the initial concentrations of p-chloroaniline were 0.022-0.274 mmol/l. The discharge action time was 0-300 s. It turned out that in all cases the observed decomposition kinetics was satisfactorily (the determination coefficient is not worse than 0.96) described by a formal equation of the first kinetic order in the concentration of p-chloroaniline. The apparent rate constant of decomposition depended on the discharge current and the initial concentration of the solution. The rate constant decreased with increasing initial concentration at a given current and increased with increasing current at a given concentration. Typical values of rate constants were ~ (0.01-0.05) s-1. The rate constants and rates of decomposition depended on whether the solution was the anode or the cathode. For the liquid cathode, the constants and rates were always higher than for the liquid anode under the same conditions (initial solution concentration and discharge current). At discharge burning times from 180 to 300 s, p-chloroanaline was completely decomposed. The power input into the discharge was measured for the cases of liquid cathode and anode. With the discharge current increasing from 30 to 70 mA, the power increased from 27.3 to 47.1 W for the anode and from 32.1 to 71.8 W for the cathode. Based on the obtained data, the energy yield of decomposition was determined. The yield also depended on the discharge parameters and the concentration of the solution. Its value was ~ (0.01-0.06) molecules per 100 eV of input energy. For citation: Ignatiev A.A., Ivanov A.N., Shutov D.A., Rybkin V.V. Abstract
