Stem Cell Therapy in Diabetes: Prospects and Challenges
Diabetes mellitus has a serious impact on patients' health and quality of life. Chronic hyperglycemia can lead to a series of acute and chronic complications, such as diabetic foot, diabetic nephropathy, diabetic retinopathy, diabetic neuropathy and cardiovascular disease. In addition, diabetes disrupts the pre-existing organized capacity for wound healing and impedes wound healing. Traditional ways of treating diabetes, such as oral hypoglycemic agents and insulin injections. Although these methods are effective, there is no rooted cure and there is a burden of life and risk of hypoglycemia. With the gradual maturation of stem cell technology, treating diabetes with stem cells has become a possibility. This review summarizes the results of 2024 and selected 2025. The article also details the research and clinical application of stem cells in diabetes resulting in non-healing wounds and diabetic foot. It can be seen that the technology of stem cell therapy for diabetes is maturing and being widely used.
