REHABILITATION STRATEGIES FOLLOWING ACHILLES TENDON RUPTURE

Introduction: The Achilles tendon, the most robust tendon in the body, still remains susceptible to injury. The purpose of this review is to address the existing knowledge gaps regarding the comparative effectiveness of surgical and non-surgical interventions for tendon ruptures, in order to identify superior functional outcomes encompassing rehabilitation protocols. Materials and Methods: We performed a comprehensive search strategy across multiple electronic databases, including PubMed, Web of Science, Elsevier, The Cochrane Library, Pedro. Articles containing data regarding rehabilitation following Achilles tendon rupture along with relevant literature evidencing the use of adequate protocols were included for analysis. Results and Discussions: Achilles tendon rupture is intricately linked to diverse risk factors. Among sports-related determinants, inadequate conditioning, overexertion, and engagement in activities such as soccer, basketball, and racquet games can increase vulnerability. The main objective of a rehabilitation program is focused on safeguarding the surgical repair, preserving hip, knee, and core strength, and address swelling. By the end of week 12, the rehabilitation objectives include continued repair protection, avoiding Achilles over-elongation, normalizing gait and restoring full range of motion. The last stages of the rehabilitation process, require the use of tendon loading exercises in order to gradually promote return to daily activities. Conclusions: The rehabilitation period is a dynamic process that enables an individualized approach. The integration of progressive rehabilitation programs represents an important step in promoting adequate tissue healing and restoring proper function.
