The role of the media in enhancing national communication at Sultan Qaboos University

This study aims to explore the role of media in enhancing institutional communication at Sultan Qaboos University (SQU), including both vertical (upward and downward) and horizontal communication. It seeks to identify the role of the Directorate of Communication and Media in facilitating internal communication (with students and staff) as well as external communication (with the community). The study also investigates the media tools employed by the Directorate to support this communication and analyzes the content published by the university across both traditional and modern media platforms. This study falls within the scope of descriptive research, which goes beyond the mere collection of statistical data to include data analysis. The researcher adopts a descriptive-analytical approach by defining key terms, analyzing the university’s official communication channels, and identifying their role in fostering institutional communication. The media tools analyzed include social media accounts, email, the official website, radio, newspapers, television, and the monthly newsletter—covering the period from January 1, 2024, to June 30, 2024. The study concludes that the Directorate of Communication and Media is responsible for managing media communication at Sultan Qaboos University. The Directorate comprises several departments, including the Media Department, Strategic Communication Department, Digital Communication Department, Creative Content Department, Translation Department, and the Coordination, Follow-up, and Archiving Department. It utilizes a diverse range of media channels to communicate with both internal audiences (staff and students) and external audiences (the community). These channels include print media (e.g., Iqra’ and Imprint newsletters, and local newspapers), radio programs (e.g., Anwar and Hala SQU, as well as local radio stations), television (e.g., live broadcasts of university events and celebrations, and news reports), social media platforms (e.g., X, Instagram, SoundCloud, and YouTube), email, the university’s official website, and the Anwar news portal. Furthermore, the study finds that the Directorate of Communication and Media leverages media as a strategic tool for institutional communication. It informs both internal and external audiences about the university’s performance, enhances the university’s reputation, promotes a positive image, organizes internal workflows, publicizes university events and occasions, raises awareness among stakeholders, provides information across a wide range of fields, and ensures ongoing, reciprocal communication with all audiences.
