Liquid crystal trimers containing tertiary benzanilide groups

The highly bent shape of tertiary amides offers a new design element for liquid crystals with unconventional shapes. Here we report an unusual family of liquid crystal trimers, with a marked contraction of the smectic layer spacing on cooling.
