Structural design and optimization of cryo-compressed hydrogen storage vessels
Abstract Cryo-compressed hydrogen storage has significant advantages in terms of hydrogen storage density, storage cost, and non-destructive storage time. Due to the cryogenic-temperature and high-pressure conditions, the hydrogen storage vessel becomes the key to high-density and safe hydrogen storage. This study establishes a prediction model for the mechanical properties of cryo-compressed hydrogen storage vessel and analyses the stress distribution in the working condition. The effects of winding angle, autofrettage pressure on the cryogenic mechanical properties of the vessel are further investigated. It is found that the stress in the vessel cylinder section is gradually taken up by the hoop layer when the winding angle is increased. The autofrettage pressure is beneficial in reducing the stress level of the liner under working condition. The results of the study can provide support for the design and optimization of cryo-compressed hydrogen storage vessels.
