Selective Video Coding Method Using LCEVC and Base Codecs
This paper proposes a novel video coding method that selectively switches between Low Complexity Enhancement Video Coding (LCEVC) and a base codec at the Group of Pictures (GOP) level, leveraging the capabilities of LCEVC. LCEVC, which is standardized as MPEG-5 Part 2, is a cutting-edge video coding standard designed to enhance the efficiency of conventional codecs. However, due to its layered structure, there are cases where better video quality can be achieved without using LCEVC. To address this, the proposed method dynamically toggles the use of LCEVC, depending on the video coding results of each GOP. Experimental results show that this adaptive approach improves video quality by 16.18 % compared to LCEVC.
