An Analog-Based Phase Shedding Control Technique for Interleaved Boost PFC Converters

This paper proposes an efficient phase shedding control (PSC) technique for interleaved boost PFC converters (IB-PFC), which can be implemented using a simple analog circuit. A comprehensive mathematical loss model is presented to properly calculate the optimal phase switching point, complemented by a detailed explanation of the operating principle and design methodology of the analog circuit in use. The experimental validation using a 2.5 kW converter prototype with the UCC28070A controller indicates that the proposed PSC technique enhances the efficiency by approximately 1% at a power level of 10% load. Besides, the optimal phase-changing point is identified to occur at around 35% of the rated load, effectively improving the performance under light-to-moderate load conditions.
