Unlocking the Power of Digital Transformation: The Role of Ontologies
The industry is currently facing significant challenges in achieving seamless data interoperability and effective stakeholder communication due to heterogeneous data sources and formats. This paper emphasizes the role of ontologies and knowledge graphs in the ongoing industrial digital transformation. By utilizing standardized frameworks, we demonstrate how knowledge graphs enhance stakeholder communication and enables semantic interoperability between systems and workflows. Using a pump station as a case study, we illustrate the practical application of ontologies, showcasing the benefits of reasoning engines, axioms, and querying capabilities. The study is meant to illustrate how information such as a plant description can extend its usefullness throughout the lifecycle of the plant. The results of our case study showcases the benefits of adopting semantic models and ontologies to improve operational efficiency, data consistency, and collaboration within the process industry. Furthermore, the main contribution of this work is to provide a comprehensive approach that facilitates interoperable information management. Leveraging upper ontologies, we enable a widespread and general understanding of industrial assets and processes, thus promoting a more integrated and efficient industrial environment. This paper aims to bridge the gap between heterogeneous data sources and stakeholders, fostering a more cohesive and effective industrial ecosystem.
