Typhoon HIL Modeling and Control of Grid-Connected Hybrid Renewable Energy System
Among the top global trends of this decade are hybrid renewable energy sources (RES) used for electrical generation and utilities. Multiple projects are underway to use this extra energy to meet demand and create a zero-emission environment. Utility grids most simply integrate renewables through photovoltaics, which may include energy storage in batteries or pumped systems. While designs and calculations are necessary for achieving these goals, real-time simulation software offers a benefit. To observe such behavior, one might consider using the real-time simulation tool Typhoon HIL. This educational paper discusses the simulation of a grid-following inverter system using the d-q decoupled current controller to generate the PWM signals by controlling the active and reactive power. Using renewables as DC sources, PV, SC, and Batteries. This paper will examine several aspects of renewables and filter designs, as well as power, voltage, and current control. Typhoon HIL's real-time simulation will demonstrate the simulation and control of such a system.
