Design of Metamaterial- Infused MIMO Antenna for 5G Mobile Communication

Aim: A metamaterial-infused MIMO antenna is proposed in this paper, which operates from 15.37 GHz to 22.71 GHz with resonances at 16.55GHz, 17.55GHz, 19.65GHz and 21.85GHz. The prototype is designed using FR-4 substrate <tex xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">$(\varepsilon r=4.4, tan\delta =\theta.\theta 2)$</tex> with a dimension of <tex xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">$29.4^{*}3Smm^{2}$</tex> and a dielectric height of 1.6mm which is obtained from the design equation of Microstrip Patch Antenna and optimized for better results. The prototype is implemented using Ansys Electronics 2024 R2 (HFSS) software. The SISO is loaded with metamaterial, circularly truncated corners in the copper-patch and a defected ground Structure. The SISO is converted into a 2-Element MIMO System of dimension <tex xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">$8\theta^{\star}S\theta^{*}1.6mm^{3}$</tex> with orthogonal feeding technique to enhance Isolation, Mutual Coupling Properties which are essential in the MIMO systems. The operating bandwidth is obtained to be 7.4 GHz. The antenna parameter such as S-parameter, Gain, Efficiency, VSWR and MIMO parameters such as DG and TARC are observed to be good. The MIMO antenna exhibits very good return loss with maximum a −40.db at 20GHz and the efficiency is maintained to be above 65% for the entire band. This proposed system become as good candidate for K-band 5g mobile applications.

Abstract

Aim: A metamaterial-infused MIMO antenna is proposed in this paper, which operates from 15.37 GHz to 22.71 GHz with resonances at 16.55GHz, 17.55GHz, 19.65GHz and 21.85GHz.
