IoT-Based Multi-Sensor Monitoring System for Tunnel Rescue Operations

Tunnel rescue operations present significant challenges due to hazardous conditions, limited visibility, and restricted communication. This paper proposes an IoT-based tunnel rescue system that integrates real-time monitoring, sensor networks, and automated response mechanisms to enhance rescue efficiency and safety. The proposed system utilizes an Arduino-based microcontroller interfaced with gas sensors, vibration sensors for structural integrity monitoring, temperature and humidity sensors, and a GPS module for tracking personnel and equipment. Data collected from these sensors is transmitted via an IoT platform, enabling remote monitoring and predictive analytics for early hazard detection. Additionally, a wireless communication module ensures real-time updates to rescue teams, even in low-connectivity environments. The proposed system is simulated using Proteus software to validate its functionality and is also implemented in hardware for real-world testing. The results demonstrate the system's effectiveness in detecting hazardous conditions and providing timely alerts.
