Comunidades de pescadores fluviomarítimos na APA de Santa Cruz (PE)
The traditional inhabitant of the coast is usually referred to as caiçara, which corresponds to the social agent that interacts with the maritime space through a relation of subsistence. Its historical construction reflects the mirror of the colonization of Brazil: indigenous people, enslaved Africans, and European colonizers. The ways of living of these people have specificities in the usage and appropriation of the landscape, having the relationship with water bodies as a common link. In Brazil, fishermen, canoe dwellers, and sailors have used, along the coast, the various water bodies available for food, locomotion, and transportation. Understanding, from a historical perspective, the social reflexes of these relations in the territories connected by the waters in the Environmental Protection Area of Santa Cruz, in the northern coast of Pernambuco, corresponds to the main objective of our text. The place is legally constituted as a Conservation Unit since the year 2008.
