Identification of polymeric binders in anticorrosive coatings via FTIR spectroscopy
Analytical spectroscopy techniques have long been invaluable tools for rapid exploration and targeted monitoring in industrial and academic environments. Among these techniques, Fourier Transfrom Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy is particularly noteworthy for its effectiveness in real-time characterization. In particular, the Attenuated Total Reflectance (ATR) mode enables detailed analysis of complex formulations in a relatively short time. However, the increasing diversity of materials used in anticorrosion coatings, ranging from one- to two-component systems, presents significant challenges for their identification. This study demonstrates the effectiveness of FTIR in meeting these challenges by illustrating its ability to discern and characterize the components of various coating systems. Using a wide selection of paints, we illustrate the versatility and accuracy of FTIR spectroscopy as a valuable tool for the analysis of protective coatings.
