Moderate monitoring, maximum effort: A theoretical exploration
This paper develops a theoretical model to examine how performance monitoring influences incentives to exert effort. Our analysis demonstrates a nonlinear relationship between monitoring intensity and motivation: moderate oversight motivates greater effort than either no or overly stringent monitoring. Experimental evidence supports these theoretical predictions, highlighting that achievable performance thresholds substantially enhance motivation. These insights offer practical guidance for designing effective monitoring systems, with implications for organizational strategy, corporate governance practices, and policy development.
