Evaluation of SANE score as single metric for outcomes measure in patients with arthroplasty of multiple joints

This study aims to evaluate and compare patient satisfaction using the Single Assessment Numeric Evaluation (SANE) in patients who have undergone multiple total joint arthroplasty procedures, providing a more unified approach to understanding patient outcomes. A retrospective review was conducted from 2011 to 2021 for all patients who underwent a combination of total hip (THA), total knee (TKA), or total shoulder arthroplasty (TSA). Patients were asked about their personal satisfaction after surgery spanning multiple joints, along with specificity of joint replaced and perception of their overall function via the SANE criteria. These questions could be answered as functionality on a scale of 0-100. Additional information such as age at time of their last surgery was also recorded. Differences between groups were determined using either an unpaired t-test or one way ANOVA for continuous variables. Over 280 patients with an average age of 73.6±8.4 years were included in this study. The final cohort consisted of individuals who had undergone some combination of TSA, TKA, or THA. Significant difference in patient age was observed between groups, as those who had THA + TSA (71.1±9.56) were younger than the other groups (P = 0.002). Regarding SANE scores among joints, hip scores were significantly higher in patients undergoing THA and TKA with a mean score of 92.7±15.0 (P = 0.021). However, SANE scores for the shoulder and knee cohorts were not found to be significantly different (P= 0.110 and P= 0.678, respectively). Moreover, age at the time of procedure was found to be significantly lower for patients undergoing both THA and TSA with a mean age of 66.1±9.61 years (P < 0.001). The study demonstrates significant demographic differences in age among patients undergoing multiple total joint arthroplasty procedures, particularly noting that those undergoing both THA and TSA are younger.
