Excessive Use of Social Media and Depressive Symptoms in Adolescents

Objective: To analyze the impact of excessive use of social networks in adolescence and its correlation with the manifestation of depressive symptoms. Theoretical Framework: Excessive use of social networks among adolescents has generated significant concerns about the impact on the mental health of this population, especially about the development of depressive and anxious symptoms. Method: This article presents a systematic review of the literature, carried out in the BVS-Regional and Google Scholar databases, using descriptors such as “social networks”, “depression”, “adolescence” and “cognitive behavioral therapy”. Results and Discussion: Nine relevant studies published between 2019 and 2024 were selected. The studies analyzed show that digital interaction can be a risk factor for increased depression among adolescents. This impact highlights the need for interventions to mitigate the negative effects of social media use on mental health. Research Implications: Excessive use of social media is directly related to the increase in depressive symptoms among adolescents. By understanding the central role of social media in the lives of adolescents, it becomes urgent to implement educational and therapeutic actions that promote the conscious use of these technologies, preventing the worsening of depressive and anxiety conditions. Originality/Value: This study contributes to literature by bringing together research that relates the impact of excessive use of social media by adolescents, a problem that has gained prominence in the media and news. Discussing the topic is important so that changes and guidelines can be highlighted, which can favor the healthy use of these resources.
