A novel variable weighted yield criterion and its applications in burst pressure prediction of corroded pipelines

The strength theory is a study of the materials' yielding and failure under complex stress. The burst pressure of pipelines with corrosion cannot be predicted accurately under complex loadings. One important reason is that the yield criterion for the material is not accurate enough. To predict the burst pressure of pipelines with corrosion defects, this study proposes a novel variable weighted (VW) yield criterion based on dynamic parameter method (DPM). First, the VW yield criterion which weights the Tresca and twin shear stress (TSS) yield criteria is proposed. Second, new pipeline burst pressure equations are developed based on the VW yield criterion, and the predictions are compared with the available experimental data. Next, the weighted coefficient in VW yield criterion is optimized by DPM. In the end, the calculated results are compared with those based on mean yield (MY) criterion and weighted average (WA) yield criterion. The results show that the calculated results based on VW yield criterion are more accurate than those based on MY and WA yield criteria. The VW yield criterion provides a reference for the construction of strength theory under data-driven paradigm.
