ASSESSMENT OF THE POSSIBILITY OF USING PEROXODISERIC ACID IN WASTEWATER TREATMENT PROCESSES FROM PHENOL AND ITS DERIVATIVES

The application of the most promising direction of the destruction of phenols and its derivatives, namely, processes with the formation of free radicals – Advanced Oxidation Processes, has been studied. A solution of peroxodiseric acid (H2S2O8) was used as a source of highly effective oxidizing agents - sulfate radicals. The studied oxidizer is an intermediate product of the electrochemical oxidation of sulfuric acid solutions, and therefore has a number of advantages over traditional oxidizers due to the low cost and wide availability of the initial precursor. It is proved that the decomposition of H2S2O8 proceeds with the formation of free sulfate radicals (SO4-·), hydroxyl radicals (OH·) and superoxide radicals (O2-·), which significantly increases the efficiency of oxidative degradation. Several approaches to the activation of the decomposition of peroxodiseric acid with the formation of free radicals have been studied: catalytic, alkaline and thermal. The effect of pH on the process of destruction of phenol and its derivatives has been determined. Metals of variable valence Ti3+, Fe2+, and Fe3+ were selected as decomposition catalysts based on Fenton-like systems. Iron (II) salt was found to be optimal for all the pollutants studied. The highest removal efficiencies of phenol and its derivatives were achieved with alkaline activation: for hydroquinone (99.9%), phenol (76.2%), pyrocatechin (62.2%) and resorcinol (34.5%). A decrease in the efficiency of the destruction of resorcinol with an increase in temperature was noted, and therefore the mechanisms of decomposition of each studied pollutant depending on the parameters of the process were proposed. It has been found that, in some cases, the combination of several activation methods allows to achieve high degrees of destruction (more than 76%). The results obtained allow us to consider peroxodiseric acid as an alternative oxidizer of pollutants from wastewater of large-scale industries. Abstract
