Ir-Based Nanocatalysts Supported on CeZr Oxide for Hydrogen Oxidation with Suppressed H2O2 Production for Fuel Cells
In the development of proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs), one of the key issues is the limited durability of the proton exchange membrane (PEM). Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) can be generated when oxygen diffusing from the cathode is reduced on a conventional Pt/C (carbon-supported Pt catalyst) anode, which can lead to the formation of oxygen-derived free radicals such as the hydroxyl radical (•OH), causing chemical degradation of the PEM. Here, we designed an iridium (Ir)-based nanocatalyst supported on CeZr oxide, exhibiting practical hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR) activity and significantly suppressing H2O2 production, which is promising for use as an anode catalyst to mitigate PEM degradation, thus contributing to improving the durability of PEMFCs.
