A Pre-Experimental Study to Assess the Effectiveness of Structured Teaching Programme in Terms of Knowledge on Water Birth Among Nursing Students in A Selected College of Nursing, Delhi.
Background: Water birth is the process of laboring or giving birth in a tub of warm water. The theory behind water birth is that the baby has already been in the amniotic fluid sac for nine months, so birthing in a similar environment is gentler for the baby and less stressful for the mother. The buoyancy of water lessens the mother's body weight and allows for free movement and positioning. Water birth can offer various benefits for both the baby and the mother. For the mother, it may provide pain relief, promote relaxation, and potentially shorten the duration of labor. Aims of the study: The aims of study were to assess the pre-test and post-test level of knowledge regarding water birth among nursing students, to evaluate the effectiveness of a structured teaching program on water birth among nursing students and to find out the association between post-test knowledge scores and their selected socio-demographic variables like gender and course of study of nursing students. Design and Setting: A pre-experimental study was conducted with one group pre-test post-test design. The study was conducted in Rufaida College of Nursing, Jamia Hamdard, New Delhi. Sample and sampling: 147 nursing students were selected using the enumerative sampling technique. Method: Structured knowledge questionnaires were used to collect the data. Result: Before administering the Structured Teaching Program, most of the nursing students 111 (75.5%) had inadequate knowledge whereas 36 (24.49%) had moderately adequate knowledge of water birth. The data revealed that after administering Structured Teaching Program on water birth 105 (71.43%) had adequate knowledge whereas 42 (28.57%) had moderately adequate knowledge. There was a significant association between course of study and post-test knowledge scores among nursing students. Conclusion: The current study concludes that Structured Teaching Programme on water birth is an effective method to enhance knowledge of nursing students on water birth.
