Dairy Intolerance in Transition From Old World to New World Milk - Is A1 β-casein Responsible?
were measured by the standard methods. Results: Data of 44 patients were eligible: 31 with Ulcerative colitis (17m/14f), 13 (11m/2f) with Crohn's disease. The consumption of main nutrients did not differ between the CD and UC groups.Serum concentrations below lower reference limits were found for cholecalciferol (in 50% of patients), vitamin B1 (in 50%), iron (in 38.6%) and folate (in 40.9%).Significant negative correlation was found between the intake of sugars and serum concentrations of iron (Spearman R -0.32), zinc (-0.37), cholecalciferol (-0.31), and folates (-0.36).The consumption of fats negatively correlated with serum concentrations of potassium (-0.32) and vitamin B12 (-0.38).Positive correlation was found between tomatoes, cucumbers, zucchini intake and serum concentration of iron (0.48); cabbage intake and serum level of zinc (0.32); wild berries and vitamin D3 (0.33); consumption of citrus fruits and thiamine (0.38); consumption of eggs and serum folates (0.33).Conclusions: Regular monitoring of micronutrients supply (iron, folate, vitamins D and B1) is necessary for patients with IBD receiving biological therapy.Diet modification with special emphasis on the intake of factors associated with sources of micronutrients is important for patients with IBD receiving biological treatment in regard to improvement of the quality of diet, nutrition diversity, elimination of proinflammatory components from the diet.
