Phytochemical Nature and Antimicrobial Properties of Piper Betel L.

Piper betel L. is widely recognized for its medicinal properties. During present investigation phytochemical diversity and antimicrobial activities of two Piper betel varieties (Karpoora and Anthiyur ) were assessed. For this purpose the plant materials were extracted in methanol (MeOH), ethyl acetate (EAT), and chloroform (CCF) for the extraction of bioactive compounds. Phytochemical analysis revealed that methanol was having highest extraction efficacy, solubilizing a wide range of secondary metabolites. CCF extracts exhibited highest antibacterial activity against gram-positive bacteria. The results highlighted significance of solvent selection and geographical variation in determining bioactivity of Piper betel, thereby facilitating the development of plant-based antimicrobial agents and additional pharmacological applications.
