The Effect of Nursing Students' Self-Concept and Social Support on Learned Helplessness

As expectations for the role of nurses have increased due to recent developments in the medical field, expectations for the level of education of nursing students have also increased. This descriptive research study confirms nursing students' self-concept, social support, and learned helplessness. The subjects of the study were 191 sophomore nursing students who agreed to participate in this study.Data were collected from September 5, 2024, to September 19, 2024, and the collected data were analyzed using real numbers and percentages, mean and standard deviation, t-test, ANOVA, Scheff's test, Pearson correlation coefficient, and multiple regression analysis. The results are as follows: First, the average self-concept of nursing students was 3.410.44points, and social support was 2.950.68points.The average learned helplessness was 2.360.56 points, which was lower than the average.Second, self-concept showed a positive correlation with social support (r=.626, p<.001), and learned helplessness showed a negative correlation (r=-.630,p<.001).Social support showed a positive correlation with self-concept (r=.474, p<.001), and learned helplessness showed a negative correlation (r=-.566,p<.001).Third, the factors affecting the learned helplessness of nursing students are selfconcept (=-.571,p<.001) and social support (=-.247, p<.001), and these variables explained 44% of the level of learned helplessness (F=75.536,p<.001).Therefore, it is recommended that these results be used as basic data to seek ways to achieve positive academic results among nursing students.
