Revitalizing Industrial Legacy: Transforming a Steel Mill Ore Dock into a Multi-Modal Transportation Hub
Tradepoint Atlantic (TPA) began its transformation in 2014 by acquiring the 3,300-acre Bethlehem Steel Mill site in Sparrows Point, Maryland. The goal was to develop a multi-modal transportation hub, capitalizing on the site’s infrastructure and strategic location. Key to this vision was rebuilding a berth and developing adjacent lands to support the US offshore wind industry, utilizing proximity to the Atlantic Ocean for manufacturing and shipping wind farm components. TPA overcame structural and environmental challenges, repurposing the former ore dock into a vital East Coast shipping port by reinforcing foundations and upgrading facilities. This successful redevelopment has made Tradepoint Atlantic a key player in East Coast logistics, supporting offshore wind and other industries. The revitalized site now supports diverse industries and has become a catalyst for regional economic growth and innovation, preserving industrial heritage while driving modern economic development.
