Site-Specific Phase-Resolving Tsunami Modeling for the Design of Harbors and Coastal Infrastructure in the US Southwest
Boussinesq-type wave models have been widely used for simulating tsunami propagation in the deep ocean, as well as for nearshore tsunami propagation and tsunami flooding, to inform the planning and design of critical infrastructure along Pacific State shorelines. This study focused on implementing the FUNWAVE-TVD model to simulate tsunami flooding in Pearl Harbor, located on the south side of Oahu Island in Hawaii. The model inputs and setup were performed following guidelines and requirements by the American Society of Civil Engineers. The FUNWAVE-TVD simulation results of tsunami inundation elevation and tsunami flow velocities were analyzed to assess the flooding of critical infrastructure surrounding Pearl Harbor. The results from FUNWAVE-TVD were further compared with the practical one-dimensional Energy Grade Line method, and a discussion on the performance and recommendations for the application of these methods are provided.
