Comparative Analysis of Effects and Active Support Capability of Fault Ride-Through Methods for the VSG Under Different Grid Faults
With the extensive use of distributed new energy sources, the virtual synchronous generator (VSG) is widely involved in the grid-connected generation of new energy sources due to their inherent inertia and damping capabilities. However, when a voltage drop occurs in the grid due to a short-circuit fault, the VSG can burn out due to a large overcurrent shock. In order to prevent the VSG from being burnt, the VSG needs to have fault ride-through capability and provide certain reactive power support for the grid. Existing studies on the VSG mostly focus on the steady-state without focusing on the dynamic performance of the VSG during grid faults. To solve this problem, this paper focuses on several commonly used fault ride-through control methods. It analyses the current limiting effect and reactive power support capability of these methods through simulation comparison. Finally, based on the simulation results, it is concluded which fault ride-through control method provides better performance regarding the current limiting effect and active grid support capability.
