IoT-Driven Automated Waste Disposal System with Integrated Real-Time pH Monitoring for Environmental Sustainability

Accumulation of solid waste in drainage systems leads to blockages, hindering water flow and causing frequent floods during the monsoon. This damages road networks, creates waterlogging that fosters disease-carrying mosquitoes, and pollutes soil, groundwater, and drinking water sources, posing public health at risk. Furthermore, an inadequately controlled drainage system can alter water pH, jeopardizing aquatic ecosystems by depleting vital minerals and diminishing oxygen levels, hence endangering fish and other organisms. To address these concerns, we designed a system that automatically collects waste and disposes of it into a bin while continuously monitoring water pH. Using sensors and actuators, the system disposes of waste and sends notifications when the bin is full and needs emptying. In addition to that, it continuously uses cloud data transfer to send pH data to the authorities about abnormal levels in order to avert water contamination. The primary objective of this system is to reduce the waterlogging and protect aquatic ecosystems by ensuring its optimal water circulation and minimizing initial pollution. Latency tests of different operations are measured. Quantitative evaluation tests are done to measure the efficiency of the system. By conducting a quantitative evaluation, we got an accuracy of 93.3% of the IR sensor within the waste collector.
