Transition to the Green and Sustainable Energy: A Case Study of Passenger Vessels
The decision to replace diesel engines with hydrogen fuel cells is a momentous and impactful choice. This study examines the feasibility and environmental benefits of replacing diesel engines with Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells (PEMFC) on the MV Sundarban-10, a passenger vessel between Dhaka and Barisal, Bangladesh. This analysis reveals an 8-hour journey using 2.88 tons of diesel emits 2.52 tons of carbon dioxide. Substituting diesel engines with hydrogen-based Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell (PEMFC) can significantly lower these carbon dioxide emissions. PEM fuel cells are at the forefront of clean energy technology, offering a versatile and environmentally friendly solution for various applications. Implementing hydrogen fuel cells aligns with global efforts to mitigate climate change and promotes ecological sustainability by significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions and improving riverine health.
