IoT Based Contactless Switch Using Gesture Control
The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the need to reduce physical contact with shared surfaces, particularly in public spaces. Traditional switches for controlling lights and appliances posed a health risk, as they could easily transmit infections through frequent touch. Addressing this challenge, a gesture-based control system was developed to operate electrical devices without physical contact. The system uses a laptop camera to detect hand movements, leveraging a hand-tracking module to recognize specific gestures. These gestures are mapped to control a hardware setup that includes a 4-channel relay module connected to low-voltage DC bulbs, simulating common household devices such as lights and fans. The aim is to provide a hygienic, user-friendly solution that enhances safety in shared environments by eliminating the need for physical switches. By integrating image processing with IoT capabilities, this system allows for contactless control of devices using simple hand gestures, reducing the potential for surface-based contamination. Performance evaluations demonstrated accurate gesture detection in controlling the devices, indicating the system’s effectiveness as a practical tool for safe, contact-free interaction in public spaces.
