Performance Analysis of a Transformer Utilizing Medium Frequency Metglas 2605SA1 and Soft Iron Cores with Litz Wire Windings

This paper explores methods for calculating core and winding losses in a transformer with a core made of Metglas 2605SA1 and windings made of litz wire, operating at a midrange frequency of 2000 Hz. Metglas 2605SA1, an amorphous metal alloy, is known for its low-loss characteristics, making it an excellent choice for transformers. Although its initial cost is higher than that of conventional soft iron core transformers, it offers lower annual operating costs due to reduced losses and higher efficiency. The use of litz wire in the winding design effectively reduces AC resistance and minimizes skin and proximity effects, ensuring improved performance at high temperatures (150°C) and medium frequencies. Comparatively, the proposed transformer design demonstrates greater long-term efficiency and cost-effectiveness than traditional soft iron core transformers.
