Mapping of Potential Sites for Mini-Hydro Power Plants in Rangamati Using GIS

In this research an approach was made to find potential mini hydro power plant in the district Rangamati. As Rangamati is a hill sided area a dam can be created to store water beside Karnaphuli river. This research finds that an estimation of 600 kW to 1.8 MW electricity can be produced from the area. River discharge and head profile are two characteristics of a mini hydro power plant (MHPP). But the absence of information on river heads and discharges acts as a barrier to the development of MHPP. In this study, MHPP potential is evaluated by evaluating spatial data using a GIS technique. River discharge was calculated using the SCS-CN equation, and head was calculated using the neighborhood statistical method. Using the potential energy formula, prospective sites were identified. The findings revealed 20 prospective sites in the research area, ranging in power from 600 kW to 1.8 MW. This approach is only appropriate for preliminary screening. To develop MHPP, a more thorough feasibility assessment is required.

To develop MHPP, a more thorough feasibility assessment is required.
