Mitigating Partial Shading Loss in Rooftop Solar PV Systems: Case Study and Optimization Strategies in Dhaka
Partial shading affects the efficiency of rooftop solar photovoltaic (PV) systems, offering a challenge to renewable energy generation. This study looks into the impact of shading and proposes mitigation measures to improve system performance. The research is conducted in two phases: a case study and an experimental analysis. The case study examines five locations, such as Narsingdi, Kanchan Bazar, Mirpur 1, Pirer-Bag, and Doyaganj—to assess the real-world impact of partial shading on solar PV installations. Experimental findings reveal that a 20% shaded area on a panel results in an average power loss of 81.26%, highlighting the disproportionate effect of shading on energy output. The study underlines the importance of using appropriate shade mitigation strategies, such as PV array reconfiguration and Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) algorithms, to improve system performance. The findings are critical for policymakers, engineers, and solar energy practitioners looking to optimize energy efficiency in urban rooftop PV installations. Solar PV systems in Dhaka and other metropolitan areas can improve their reliability and efficiency by employing proper shade mitigation measures, thereby contributing to sustainable energy goals.
