Configuring a Resilient Controller for a Renewable Energy Rich Grid
Transient stability is important for maintaining reliable and continuous electricity supply, especially during disturbances that can destabilize power systems. This comprehensive investigation examines the efficacy of Linear Quadratic Regulator (LQR), Linear Quadratic Gaussian (LQG), and Sector-Bounded LQG (SBLQG) control techniques for transient stabilization in a renewable integrated IEEE 8-bus power system model. Dynamic modeling evaluates how these control strategies improve stability and reduce oscillations during disturbances. LQR stabilizes the system by minimizing a cost function, while LQE estimates system states. LQG combines both but is less practical due to sensitivity to model inaccuracies. SBLQG handles uncertainties, responding effectively to worst-case deviations within defined bounds. The simulation outcomes allow us to conclude that each of the three control approaches mentioned above is specifically successful in promoting transient stability. However, the SBLQG technology is arguably the most effective since it minimizes the cost function and helps to ensure stability and performance under all realizations of uncertainty. The results of the current investigation demonstrate the potential application of advanced control techniques to deliver more resilience to power systems.
