Emotion Detection From Textual Data Using Natural Language Processing and Machine Learning Techniques

Emotion detection is the process of identifying and interpreting emotional cues in data to understand a user’s mood or sentiment. In textual data, emotion detection has wide-ranging applications, such as analyzing sentiments on social media, evaluating customer feedback, and enhancing user experiences on digital platforms. This paper presents a machine learning-based approach for classifying emotions in text using natural language processing (NLP) techniques. The study utilizes a publicly available dataset from Kaggle, which includes labeled samples representing various emotional expressions. To achieve accurate classification, the methodology begins with text preprocessing, such as removing stopwords, punctuation, and special characters, ensuring cleaner data for analysis. Feature extraction techniques, including CountVectorizer and Term Frequency-Inverse Document Frequency (TF-IDF), are then employed to transform the raw text into meaningful numerical features. These techniques highlight patterns and associations in the text, effectively capturing the nuances of different emotional expressions. Several machine learning models were trained and evaluated using key performance metrics, such as accuracy and precision, to determine the most effective classifier for emotion detection. The results demonstrate the robustness of our approach in recognizing subtle emotional variations, providing reliable insights into textual data. This framework underscores the importance of combining NLP and machine learning techniques for emotion detection. It offers a scalable and accurate solution for applications requiring precise sentiment analysis, such as improving customer engagement, monitoring mental health, or analyzing trends in user-generated content.
