DINA-PTLC: AI-Powered Traffic Control For Faster Emergency Response

Traffic congestion has become a major issue in most parts of the globe, mainly as a result of the high rate of vehicle growth. Consequently, the speeds of vehicles have reduced, resulting in lost time, lost opportunities, and increased frustration. Traffic congestion affects businesses too, resulting in loss of money, decreased worker productivity, lost trade opportunities, late deliveries, and increased expenses. In order to address these problems, new facilities and infrastructure need to be developed along with integrating advanced technologies to make them intelligent. Although widening roads and lanes is not always possible, using intelligent solutions through advanced technology can reduce traffic issues. More efficient traffic control systems are a pressing need. Nowadays, automatic traffic lights are managed by timers and sensors, where each phase is pre-programmed with a standard time. Yet, as worldwide vehicular traffic keeps increasing, it tends to cause heavy jams at intersections. Most traffic lights operate on a standard green-light cycle without consideration for emergency vehicles. Accordingly, emergency vehicles like ambulances, police vehicles, and fire engines can be trapped in traffic, leading to delays that can lead to loss of property or life. The major objective of our project is to enhance the flow of traffic and facilitate that emergency vehicles are able to reach their destinations without making unnecessary detours. This system will be put into practice through computer programs like Raspberry Pi OS, Pygame, Raspberry Pi GPIO, and Python to facilitate automatic lane clearance for ambulances.
